Emma – Kent – Living with FND

Emma’s Story

Hi, I’m Emma.

When I was 16 years old, I suffered a head injury after falling out of a bunk bed. On the 21st of July 2015, I sustained a concussion from the fall, and ever since then I have experienced dissociative seizures. After years of symptoms of FND, I was finally diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder in January 2026.

Even after my diagnosis of FND, I still struggle daily. Most days, I rely on my mum, who is also my carer, to help me with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and sometimes even dressing myself.

Despite my daily struggles with this condition, I try to keep myself busy, and I also try to leave the house on a regular basis. Despite being only 27 years old, I have to use a mobility aid every time I leave the house to help me walk, as I cannot walk very far without experiencing extreme pain.

Many people often describe me as a bubbly person. While that may be true, I also tend to hide my pain from others.

I am extremely thankful that I have received a lot of support, not only from my family but from my local community as well, which makes things a little easier.
